Cornelius is a town of just over 15 square miles. It is situated in Mecklenburg County, approximately 20 miles north from the city of Charlotte. The city was founded in 1905, and currently has two tax rates. The town tax rate is $0.24, and the Mecklenburg County tax rate is $0.8157.

Cornelius sits on the shores and around the area of Lake Norman. This lake was made in 1963 when the Catawba River was dammed. Once filled, the lake had over 500 hundred miles of shoreline, and Cornelius enjoys more than any other municipality sitting on the lake, with roughly 70 miles of shoreline to itself.

The population growth of Cornelius has followed state and local trends, perhaps even more dramatically so. The 2000 United States Census put the population head count at 11,969, but at 24,866 in 2010. A mid-census estimate by the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management puts the 2015 population at nearly 30,000.

Nearly a quarter of the population is under the age of 20, with over half under 40. The balance between the genders is almost identically even, with women outnumbering men by only 2 percentage points.

The new millenium boom of population has also seen an explosion in income as the median income went from just under sixty grand in 2001 to over eight grand per year in 2010. Major employers in Cornelius include the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system, the YMCA, Home Depot, Peninsula Club, Financial Independence Group, the Town of Cornelius, and Harris Teeter. Given the lakeside location and proximity to a major urban area, Cornelius is a bedroom/suburb community for those that live here and work in the city, so the median incomes are inflated by higher-paying jobs elsewhere in the county.  The city is a major hub for small businesses.  Cornelius carpet cleaning companies and other small businesses thrive here because of the great community.
